This space is for those enthusiastic 5th year students I have the pleasure to teach (groups A&F) at EOI Sevilla, who would like to extend their learning experience beyond the classroom. Those who enjoy feeling languages, which are indeed the vivid expression of ourselves and our reality. Welcome to this sharing place and have loads of fun with us! Inma & 'the fifths'
I confess I can't work it out properly. I've got the lyrics (Extraordinary Machine) in English, and I tried to translate it, but it's not that easy...I would need some help... Maybe she just was trying to make it cryptic, and maybe this song was written for somebody particularly, somebody who'd have the clues to understand it... Look at this paragraph of her song 'A Mistake', I'm gonna make a mistake I'm gonna do it on purpose I'm gonna waste my time 'Cause I'm full as a tick And I'm scratching at the surface And what I find is mine...
These are some words by F. Apple herself about 'Extr. Machine' on her website:
"'Extraordinary Machine' really says how I feel about myself," says Apple. "I like it when I write a song that if somebody were to ask me a question like, 'how do you feel about yourself?' I could say, 'here.' I like songs that are like speeches or essays, that make a point very tidy and clear.
Musically this is what separates her from the rest, the surreal, sublime, hearing some of her work reminds me of a poem by Lawrence Ferlinghetti "Constantly risking absurdity" somehow she can walk that tightrope and find a balance...pulling off another highwire act of sheer brilliance. This is a Fiona self confidence piece, in more ways than one.
Notice the irony in the expression 'the road just rolls out behind me', instead of 'ahead of me'. And so many other lines we should definitely comment about if you are up to it...
